Everything You Need to Know About Butterfly World in Fort Lauderdale
The Story
The result of one man’s hobby gone wild, Butterfly World in Fort Lauderdale began in 1968 in Robert Boender’s home. After learning of an opportunity to produce farmed butterflies for universities and zoos, Boender founded his very own butterfly farm. This development became important, as Boender’s farming techniques are still used today at Butterfly World. In 1988, what was once just a small habitat become Butterfly World, a 3-acre collection of aviaries. Today, the park features two additional enclosures that house exotic birds. The park has been an enormous hit in Fort Lauderdale and has even helped save endangered butterfly species!
Butterfly World Exhibits
Once you enter Butterfly World through the laboratory, you’ll be amazed at the top-notch habitats and variety of equipment used for raising butterfly larva. While in the building, visitors can only move forward, not backward through the Butterfly World exhibits. This is to ensure that no butterflies are released into other areas and that guests are properly inspected before leaving. As you progress through the park, you’ll encounter the Paradise Adventure Aviary and Tropical Rainforest Room, where hundreds of fluttering creatures float past you. Then, you’ll see tropical birds in the Jewels of the Sky Aviary, Lorikeet Encounter, and Macaw Landing exhibits. There’s even a bug sanctuary to explore here, so be sure to set aside plenty of time for your visit!
Events the Whole Family Will Love
There’s always a fun event taking place at Butterfly World in Fort Lauderdale! Whether you and your family love live music or hands-on workshops, you’re sure to stumble upon a fun happening here. During the park’s Butterfly Gardening Workshop, for example, families learn how to start their own homemade butterfly gardens! Most Butterfly World events take place at the park’s Grand Plaza.
